Still Working on Surtain Trade
|
Tue, 19 Apr 2005 20:58:05 -0700
Updating ongoing reports, according to KCChiefs.com, Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson has confirmed that the Chiefs continue to work on a possible deal to land Miami Dolphins CB Patrick Surtain in a trade. "We're still talking, still negotiating, still trying to do something that makes sense contract-wise for the Kansas City Chiefs and it has to make sense for Patrick and his representative," Peterson said. Peterson added a deal would have to get done prior to the NFL Draft because Surtain's contract situation was "too complex" to be worked out on draft day.

Q&A with Carl Peterson: THE DRAFT & THE OFF-SEASON
|
Q: Have you got done what you had hoped to get done so far this off-season with the draft still to come?
CARL PETERSON: “It’s not everything we wanted but the goal at the beginning of free agency was let’s get a linebacker, let’s get a safety and let’s get a corner. We’ve done two of those three with Kendrell Bell and Sammy Knight at linebacker and safety respectively. I’m still working on the corner situation and we have a couple of options out there in free agency Full Story Here |

Q: Is solving the personnel puzzle an enjoyable time for you?
DICK VERMEIL: “I think our entire organization enjoys that. They’ve worked really hard together to come up with a collective agreement on a direction to go and the persons to go with. I’m optimistic. I think we’ll do a very good job.” Full Story Here |

Surtain a Chief? - "The Surtain trade is still very likely"
|

AP reports Chiefs GM Carl Peterson felt like the Chiefs had to do in free agency: get a cornerback, a linebacker and a safety. Peterson feels like they got the linebacker in LB Kendrell Bell, who was The Sporting News rookie of the year four seasons ago and who played in only three games last year because of injuries. Peterson feels like they got the safety in S Sammy Knight, a one-time Pro Bowler who has 35 career interceptions. Peterson also feels like they got a bonus when they traded a fifth-round pick to Tennessee for DE Carlos Hall, a defensive end who had eight sacks as a rookie but has not been as effective since. “I expect him to be a major plus,” Peterson says. So that leaves the cornerback spot. “We have a couple of options there,” Peterson says. “One, of course, is CB Ty Law. The other is more complicated and involves (Miami's) CB Patrick Surtain. We are still having conversations with him about a contract — we have not come to an agreement as has been reported. But we are still talking, and if we do agree to something that makes sense for both him and the Kansas City Chiefs, then we would have to talk to the Dolphins about draft compensation. But we have not reached that point yet.” Peterson feels like at the end of the day, he will fill those positions of need one way or another — the Surtain trade is still very likely. But he also feels like the defense will not get better unless Cunningham's defensive philosophy takes hold, and some of the players already on the Chiefs step up. |

Teicher: Cornerback corners Chiefs
|
In a perfect world, the Chiefs would have their cornerback by now. They would have signed Samari Rolle, traded for Patrick Surtain or otherwise landed a veteran corner.
Then the Chiefs would be free to concentrate on this weekend's draft in that context.
But Rolle signed instead with Baltimore, Surtain is still property of the Miami Dolphins, and the Chiefs are still without a burning defensive need. Full Story... |

Teicher: Chiefs find out hard way, NFL draft can be crap shoot
|
BY ADAM TEICHER
Knight Ridder Newspapers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (KRT) - If you're looking for a reason the Chiefs were 7-9 last year and watched the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, each team's approach to the 2002 draft is as good as any.
The Chiefs needed defensive tackles to be immediate starters. They drafted Ryan Sims and Eddie Freeman in the first two rounds and hoped they had the problem solved.
The Eagles passed on immediate needs and instead saw the bigger picture. They were getting old in the secondary and decided it was time to do something about that, so they drafted a couple of cornerbacks and a safety in the first two rounds. Read full story... |
