Can Derrick Johnson be an Immediate Starter?

Immediately visions of a playmaking linebacker crushing the quarterback for a sack off of a blitz, visions of stripping the ball from the quarterback or ball carrier and visions of short or immediate passes being intercepted entered into the minds of fans. Certainly, this is what Carl Peterson, Dick Vermeil and Gunther Cunningham envisioned as well. Certainly, Derrick Johnson envisioned this as well.

CHIEFS PLAYERS RANK AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN NFL EUROPE

The Chiefs hosted a rookie camp last weekend to gain a glimpse of potential future performers for Kansas City. While watching tapes of the activity at the practice facility, the coaches also found time to view four NFL Europe games that featured Chiefs in leading roles. Kansas City allocated 13 players to NFL Europe this spring as they continue to use the league to develop future players. Included in that group are four players who rank among the league leaders.

Chiefs say hello to a true hero

A steady stream of gawkers roll through Stephen Johnson's neighborhood these days, and things have gotten so out of control that one woman recently had the nerve to walk in, unannounced, and take a tour while his kids played upstairs.

“I call it the Sunday ticket,” Johnson said. “It's been like that every day.” Story

Madison: Surtain worth big Kansas City contract

DAVIE — The Dolphins' Sam Madison said Wednesday that watching fellow cornerback Patrick Surtain leave in a trade to the Chiefs "was hard."

"It's always tough when you play with a guy for a long period of time and he moves on," said Madison, who teamed with Surtain for five seasons. "But me and Pat discussed it over the past few years. It could have been him and it could have been me. Fortunately it was him." Full Story...

Ex-Vol Colquitt hopes to follow in dad's footsteps

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Maybe there's a punting gene in the human makeup. How else to explain the kicking Colquitts?

Craig Colquitt punted for the great Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s and has two Super Bowl rings to show for it. Jimmy is Tennessee's all-time punting leader. Britton is set to take over the punting chores for the Vols this season.

Which brings us to Dustin — son of Craig, cousin of Jimmy, brother of Britton and third-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs....

Hail To The Chiefs

Justin Perkins has already learned the first rule of the NFL: Snooze and you might lose.

Perkins had a handful of teams interested in signing him as a free agent. But by the time the cornerback made up his mind he'd lost his bargaining power.

"Arizona, Baltimore, Minnesota and Cincinnati - all those teams offered a contract," Perkins said. "By the time I made my decision those teams had picked up their next best guy."

Kansas City called a third time, but the Chiefs offered a tryout and no contract. "So I lost out on my free agency," he said.

Perkins turned the negative into a positive. He went to Kansas City for the tryout and was offered a contract, which he signed last week.

Perkins practiced with the rookies Friday through Sunday.

"I think I impressed them more than any other corner out there," Perkins said. "They had a draft pick [Alphonso Hodge, fifth round from Miami of Ohio] they were really working with when I first got there and showing a lot of attention. I noticed toward the end they knew what my name was and started working me and asking me questions and giving me a little more attention."

Perkins, who had 12 interceptions at UConn, said he feels he can help a defense that was 31st last season. The Chiefs acquired cornerback Patrick Surtain from Miami last month.

"He's a great cornerback and I would like to learn from him," Perkins said.

Dean: Who's the boss in KC?

The Chiefs decision not to offer Jason White a contract wasn't a surprise.

The process by which that decision was made, however, raises some eyebrows.

Had the tryout candidate wearing the yellow No. 6 quarterback jersey at last weekend's Chiefs rookie camp not been the 2003 Heisman Trophy winner from Big 12 champion Oklahoma, he wouldn't have merited more than a paragraph in any camp coverage. Full Story...

Injury costly to receiver

It was a simple choice of words. “Craphonso Thorpe Shatters Leg.” Thorpe was lying on the field, with 83,000 watching, and he just didn't get up. A teammate motioned for his parents to come. His mom sprinted down the bleachers.

Michelle Thorpe said those words probably cost her son millions. Story
