CHIEFS RAISE SPECTER OF moving team

For the first time in stadium improvement talks, one of Kansas City's major teams has raised the possibility of leaving town if the Truman Sports Complex is not renovated.

The Chiefs' new chairman, Clark Hunt, recently told a group of state legislators and local leaders that one or both teams would probably leave Kansas City if Jackson County defaulted on its leases with the teams and the sports complex didn't get a major face-lift soon.Full Story...

Explosive Offense

Chiefs | Explosive Offense - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 20 May 2005 09:18:40 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders has served as the team's assistant head coach/offensive coordinator since 2001. During that span, no team has scored more points (1,754), gained more yards (24,278), or been as efficient inside the 20-yard line (64.3 percent) than Kansas City.

Defending Randy Moss

When word broke that the Oakland Raiders had acquired wide receiver Randy Moss from the Minnesota Vikings in early March, the rest of the AFC West went on notice. That included the Kansas City Chiefs who added safety Sammy Knight and cornerback Patrick Surtain to be part of the forumla that stops one of the best offensive players in the NFL.

Once of the greatest challenges facing the Kansas City Chiefs this coming season is facing a beefed up Oakland Raiders squad featuring the indomitable wide receiver Randy Moss. Since coming into league in 1998, Moss has abused opposing defenses with the Vikings, and now he is bringing his own brand of secondary shredding talent to terrorize the AFC West. This news was particularly distressing to the Chiefs nation, having the absolute worst defense statistically in football.

Linebackers going places fast chiefs notebook

The Chiefs may or may not be improved on defense this season, but one thing was evident from this week’s practice sessions: They are much faster, particularly at linebacker.

“We have defensive speed over there,” coach Dick Vermeil said, “and it’s glaring.”Full Story...

Holmes a nice fit at workouts

Priest Holmes refers to “The Body” as if it’s a separate entity. The body is holding up well. The body is down 7 pounds. When it is time for Priest to call it quits, the body will tell him.

For a moment Thursday, it sounded as if Holmes was trying to hint at something. Is the end near? It’s year nine in the NFL for Holmes, the Chiefs’ veteran halfback. The knee that kept him out of the second half of 2004 is covered in a large wrap that extends to his lower calf.Full Story...

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: Was holding out WR Dante Hall out of practice today just precautionary?

VERMEIL: “No, he couldn’t practice. He has a bruised muscle around the knee area. Just like Richard Smith, he can’t go.”

Q: How long will this keep him out?

VERMEIL: “Well I think he will probably miss three days or so, but treatment will help it. You’re always fortunate because you can say it could have been worse.”

Q$A with Priest Holmes

Q: We heard you gained some weight and are a little stronger, what is with that?

HOLMES: “Actually I am back down. I was 222 pounds three weeks ago, but I’m back down to 215 pounds now. So in terms of weight it’s just a matter if I’m eating honey buns or not. You know I like to have fun in the off-season.” Full Story...

Eric Crouch's NFL Europe Diary

Hamburg Sea Devils former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Eric Crouch will write a weekly diary through the NFL Europe season to give fans an insight into his move from quarterback to safety, and life on the Sea Devils team. This week the Kansas City Chiefs allocated player talks about the frustration of having to sit out the team’s latest thrilling win.

Well unfortunately I had to watch the game against Amsterdam from the sideline again this week because I was placed on the two-week injured reserve list last Thursday with my hip, but it was probably one of the more exciting and interesting games I’ve ever seen. There were a lot of turnovers by both teams – 10 interceptions and one fumble total. We were playing one of the top-rated teams, if not the top-rated team in the league, so it was a great matchup.

We fell behind early 14-0, and that right there shows the character of this team because we could have easily let down then, but the team fought out of it and ended the game with a huge play. Defensive end Ivory McCoy picked up a fumble with less than 30 seconds remaining in overtime and returned it 29 yards for the touchdown and the win.

Holmes Back on the Practice Field for Chiefs

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs had their second organized off-season workout. It was a day that saw some impressive performances by more of their young players but the talk of the workout was the return of running back Priest Holmes to the practice field.

Two weeks ago Chiefs President Carl Peterson told the media that running back Priest Holmes had bulked up. That was evident in watching him practice today but that wasn’t the only thing you noticed about him on Wednesday. He showed that he has fully recovered from the knee injury he suffered midway through the 2004 season.

Ty Law News

Ty Law [news] - One suitor was eliminated this week when the Jets found out veteran corner Donnie Abraham would return for 2005. That leaves the Dolphins and Lions as the teams that have shown the most interest, with the Chiefs, Steelers and Colts also in the mix to varying degrees.

Law's biggest issue is that his surgically repaired left foot is not yet healed, and it probably won't be for a couple of months.

Law's hard-line agents, the Poston brothers, probably don't help his cause, either. Law was scheduled to earn $10 million this season, and the extension he turned down from the Pats in 2004 called for $11 million in first-year money. If the Postons don't come down from those numbers, it's hard to imagine Law landing anywhere soon. A return to the Pats is not in the cards.

Chiefs’ Gonzalez joins the club

Tony Gonzalez is plugging his appearance on MTV’s “Cribs.” He just flew in from Portugal and apparently forgot his iron in another time zone. His T-shirt that says “Gotta Go To Work” has gotta have at least a thousand wrinkles.

But Gonzalez cozies up to the cameras, lets out a “What’s up, fellas?” then gives a short dissertation on how he’s spent his offseason.

No player safe in KC secondary

Sammy Knight is playing a familiar position, strong safety. But doing so with a new team means the former Miami Pro Bowl player is not yet especially comfortable.

Greg Wesley is playing with familiar Kansas City teammates. But he's learning a new position -- free safety -- that takes him out of his comfort zone as the Chiefs starting strong safety for the past five years. Full Story...

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: How do you feel now that Priest Holmes is back?

VERMEIL: “It was his first day back and he is big and strong. He has been weight training an awful lot. Now he is working on cardiovascular and getting into football shape, but it was real fun to have him back.”

Q: It looked like he had an extra burst. Did you think so?

VERMEIL: “I don’t know. I didn’t see it very often; he didn’t touch the ball too many times. But anyway, it’s a start, a good start.”

Q: Do you think this year’s defense might be too fast at times?

VERMEIL: “I don’t think a defense can ever be too fast. Speed is speed. I don’t think there is a time during the season where you can just turn (speed) off and on. You might not work as hard which in turn you won’t run as fast. Our defense, right now, is a faster group of athletes overall. It’s real impressive.”

Q&A TE TONY GONZALEZ

Q: How was your first day back?

GONZALEZ: “It feels good to be back. It’s coming along. I am doing my rehab thing and I’m doing a lot of balance drills. I am not running full speed on it yet, but I’m doing a lot of box jumps, plyometrics, and medicine ball workouts. I’m just taking it easy. We have plenty of time.”

Q: So when are you going to be practicing then, mini camp?

GONZALEZ: “Like I said before I did the same thing last year and I took off the whole off-season besides in the weights. I’ll be doing all the weights. I will probably just wait until camp and just wait and see how it goes. I had a pretty good year last year, so I don’t think I’m should change too much.”

Can't stop Scanlon

Rich Scanlon wasn’t always a punishing middle linebacker. He actually started out as a running back, scampering around defenders and finding the endzone with ease.
