Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: No Jerome Woods today, did you expect him to be here today or at all?

VERMEIL: “I expect him, but I do not know when. He has some personal problems and he is working those out. Sooner or later we expect to see him.”

Q: Is that disappointing?

VERMEIL: “It’s always disappointing because you know he is such a good guy. He has been here his entire career, but he has some personal problems. It would be nice to be able to help him with those problems, but if you don’t know the problems then you can’t help him with the problems. We will see him, but in this league you go on anyway.”

Q&A RB LARRY JOHNSON

Q: Going into camp you know your role is more defined, is that a good feeling?

JOHNSON: “Oh yeah it’s a real good feeling. I know where I am starting off at and where I need to finish at. As long as I know where I’m going to begin and where I’m going to end then that’s pretty much all I am trying to take care of in the off-season.”

Q: Does it nice know that they (coaching staff) know what you can do now?

JOHNSON: “Yeah, better to get it out of the way the last couple games last season. Now I can go into this season with a full head of steam and they know what I am capable of doing. They can try and utilize what I can do as far as route running, pass catching and running the ball. They can then use Priest and I at the same time.”

Chiefs Grant Three Minority Fellowships

Former Kansas City Chiefs players Tracy Simien and JJ Smith join Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Charles Smith as the team’s 2005 Minority Fellowship coaches. They will join the team when it travels to River Falls for training camp in July.
Simien was a starter for the Chiefs at linebacker for six of the most productive seasons in team history. He averaged nearly 100 tackles a season over his time in Kansas City. He is currently a coach in NFL Europe.

If the Model Works, Work the Model

Cunningham has the plan to reshape defense.

Reconstruction!!!!Is there any better word to describe what needed to happen to the Kansas City Chiefs defense this off-season? It never seemed that Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham was ever satisfied with the notion of trying to improve to be a middle of the road defense. Gunther is a builder and the best person to bring this defense to new heights.

It would appear that the Chiefs utilized the same reconstruction model that turned a poor offense into one of the NFL’s best. It was a two year project, but we are still seeing the rewards today. One of the key’s to success is to find a model that works and repeat it over and over again. Dell, Inc. for example has used it’s direct model to become an industry leader in desktop computers, laptop/portable computers, workstations and many other products.

Crouch not bothered by Hip Injury

You might expect a guy in Eric Crouch's situation to look more than a little frustrated. Crouch, the 2001 Heisman Trophy winner as the Nebraska quarterback, came here this spring to play safety with the NFL Europe League's Hamburg Sea Devils, hoping to make the transition to another new position and a new career in football.Full Story...

CBS Sportsline: Morton likely to be cut

Johnnie Morton, WR, Kansas City: Three years ago he was one of the team's biggest free-agent acquisitions. Now, Morton is told to stay away from offseason practice, with the club poised to cut the guy if he doesn't restructure a contract set to pay him $3 million this season. So far, Morton isn't biting. Morton won't have trouble catching on elsewhere, but he will have trouble making big money. The guy simply drops too many passes in critical situations, never producing more than 55 receptions in one year for the Chiefs. Source...

Greg Wesley Switching Safety Positions

Wesley not willing to give up starting role.

If Greg Wesley wants to remain a starter on the Chiefs defense in 2005, he'll have to move from strong safety to free safety.

Greg Wesley 's prospects for retaining his starting strong safety job, one he has held in Kansas City since his 2000 rookie season, were simple. He could stay at strong safety and try to beat out Sammy Knight , the new free-agent acquisition from Miami who has been one of the league's most prolific interceptors over the past five seasons. Or he could move over to the free safety position, the job held by his long-time mentor Jerome Woods.

Wanted $500 Million for New Chiefs Stadium

The Chiefs might be searching for a new neighbor.

With the rejection of the Missouri State Legislation to fund improvements to the Truman Sports Complex last week, it?s possible either the Kansas City Chiefs or the Kansas City Royals could start exploring options to relocate their respective franchises.

It's been a bitter couple of months for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals in regards to convincing voters and legislators to raise money for stadium improvements. After BI-State two failed to pass amongst Missouri voters earlier this year, the Missouri Legislation followed suit by nixing any plans to fund stadium imrpovements for the Truman Sports Complex this past week.

Chiefs News at Foxsports.com

The position moves of William Bartee from cornerback to safety and Gary Stills from defensive end to outside linebacker make a lot of sense. Bartee had lost all confidence at cornerback and was struggling mightily. He played a lot of safety in college and has the skills to play the position in the NFL. He covers a lot of ground, tackles well and will play facing the ball. His biggest problem at cornerback came when he turned to run with a receiver and lost track of the ball. With Patrick Surtain, Eric Warfield, Dexter McCleon, Julian Battle, Benny Sapp and rookie Alphonzo Hodge at cornerback, the Chiefs are set there without Bartee. The 250-pound Stills was always a misfit at end. He never found a home there. Stills has pass rush skills that are best used when he's in space rather than lined up over a tackle who might outweigh him by as many as 75 pounds. Until Scott Fujita and Shawn Barber return from injuries, Stills has a better chance of helping the Chiefs from his new position.

Chiefs | Stills Moving Back to Linebacker

Chiefs | Stills Moving Back to Linebacker - from www.KFFL.com Sun, 22 May 2005 07:14:39 -0700 Mark Eckel, reports for the Trenton Times, the Kansas City Chiefs are moving DE Gary Stills from stand-up defensive end to linebacker, his original position when he came to the team in 1999. They feel he can be a very effective blitzer off the edge from a stand-up position. He does need to improve his pass coverage skills.

Rich Scanlon is Making His Case

Scanlon developing his game in NFL Europe.

The Chiefs design this off-season was to upgrade the linebacker position. They made a splash in free agency signing Kendrell Bell and then drafting Texas standout Derrick Johnson in the first round. Those were great additions to say the least. But one Chiefs player developing his game in NFL Europe, Rich Scanlon has started to make a name for himself on the other side of the pond.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2005 off-season needing immediate help on defense. One of their targeted areas of need was linebacker. The Chiefs have aggressively attacked that need. They went out into free agency and acquired Kendrell Bell who spent the past four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chiefs I Threatening to Move Team?

Chiefs | Threatening to Move Team? - from www.KFFL.com
Sat, 21 May 2005 10:18:04 -0700

Jeffrey Spivak and Benita Y. Williams, of the Kansas City Star, report the Kansas City Chiefs' new chairman, Clark Hunt, recently told a group of legislators and local leaders that the Chiefs and/or Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball could potentially leave Kansas City if Jackson County defaulted on its leases with the teams and the Truman Sports Complex didn't get a major face-lift soon. The issue over stadium improvements has county and sports officials meeting with the teams to plan a Jackson County tax election sometime this year, possibly in August or November. Time is running out on the legal tie that binds both the Royals and the Chiefs to Kansas City and Jackson County has put off so many maintenance projects, citing lack of funds that it is in danger of defaulting on those leases by the end of next year, which would allow the teams to move.

Chiefs I Holmes Preparing to Pass Torch to Johnson

Chiefs | Holmes Preparing to Pass Torch to Johnson - from www.KFFL.com
Sat, 21 May 2005 09:56:22 -0700

Rick Dean, of the Topeka Capital-Journal, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes acknowledges the future at the position belongs to third-year RB Larry Johnson and he will do whatever he can to ensure Johnson will pick up where he leaves off whenever he decides to retire. "He was a 2,000-yard rusher in college, and he can still do that. Not only would that keep me from taking all those hits, but it would help him get ready to take over on this team," Holmes said of splitting some carries with Johnson. "He's definitely the face of the future for the Chiefs. I'm excited to leave a legacy behind and leave him the torch."

Chiefs I Holmes Ready to Fight Through Pain

Chiefs | Holmes Ready to Fight Through Pain - from www.KFFL.com
Sat, 21 May 2005 09:52:10 -0700

Rick Dean, of the Topeka Capital-Journal, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes (knee) is ready to persevere through the wear and tear of nine NFL seasons to continue his productive career through the 2005 season. "There will always be pain after all the hits I've taken over the years," Holmes said. "But I'll be ready. Whatever it takes to be on the field, I'll do that." Holmes missed the final half of last season due to a sprained knee, but he believes he can continue to carry the workload while co-existing with RB Larry Johnson. "I definitely don't think I'll see less (playing time)," Holmes. "Hopefully, we'll have (Johnson) in some packages where we'll both be in the backfield at the same time."

Chiefs report: Notes, quotes

Priest Holmes missed the first day of the on-field sessions, but was present on Day 2 and running well -- to the casual eye, at least -- in his first two workouts.
Holmes missed the last half of the '04 campaign after spraining his medial collateral ligament. Though the injury healed without surgery, his anticipated four-game absence became an eight-game one. He stepped on a football field for the first time since last Nov. 7 -- a 6 1/2 month absence -- for the first time on Wednesday, May 18.

Knight Brings Physical Presence to Secondary

Knight has looked strong in mini-camps for KC.
As anyone who follows the Chiefs knows, their defense has lacked a physical presence in recent years. Whether it is Clinton Portis shredding the run defense or Colt receivers running freely through the secondary, no one on the Chiefs’ defense has struck fear into the hearts of opposing players. That is all about to change.

Enter Sammy Knight, a 6-0, 215 pound wrecking ball at strong safety. Knight is just what the doctor, or in this case Gunther Cunningham, ordered. The one thing the Chiefs desperately need on the defensive side of the ball is someone to create havoc and make plays. If Knight’s past is any indicator, Kansas City has brought in the right man for the job.
