Gretz: Mr. Durable

GRETZ: Mr. Durable Jun 08, 2005, 6:03:01 AM by Bob Gretz
It’s funny how the perception of Trent Green has changed over the last four years. Not funny like ha, ha, ha, did you hear the one about the rabbi and priest in the life raft? No, I mean funny, as in how he’s viewed by the fans and the media. The general consensus has come full circle on Green.
Then it was: the Chiefs are giving up a first-round draft pick for a quarterback coming off a major knee injury? Why can’t they just draft and develop their own quarterback? Why do they have to keep picking up old guys?Read More ... |

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
|
Q: Could you make a few comments about WR Freddie Mitchell, who you had in yesterday? He made a statement about you not wanting him to talk to the media?
VERMEIL: “I appreciate him saying that but I really didn’t give him any instructions. He was smart in trying to prevent some of the problems he had in Philadelphia. I have never told a player not to say anything like that but it probably was a good idea for him.”
Q: I see you have WR Az Hakim here today?
VERMEIL: “We are going to work Az Hakim in here. I had a great visit with him yesterday. He has a good frame of mind and some other opportunities. I wanted to visit with him and find out where he was. I wanted to see what kind of job he had in mind for the future. I wanted to see if there was an opportunity that we could create that might be better that he could consider.”
Q: How did the visit with Freddie Mitchell go?
VERMEIL: “I enjoyed it very much. In fact I talked to Andy Reid about it this morning. Coach Reid was very positive about the young man. ” Full Story |

Chiefs Team Report
|
The Chiefs will miss wide receiver Johnnie Morton, who was released when he wouldn't accept a pay cut. Morton didn't give the Chiefs many big plays but evolved into the dependable possession-type receiver they now lack. Morton made a number of difficult catches last season, and Trent Green often looked for him on third down. Samie Parker will provide more big plays and has good speed and hands but doesn't yet have that trust with Green. Parker has yet to prove he can be durable over a grueling season. The Chiefs also lack depth at receiver and are an injury away from trouble at the position. . . . Full Story |

When handicapping the odds for teams ending up in Los Angeles, don't leave Kansas City out of the race. Chiefs in need of veteran receiver
|
After four inconsistent seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, can "Fred-Ex" suddenly deliver for a Kansas City Chiefs team seeking help at wide receiver following the release of Johnnie Morton earlier this week?
Chiefs officials will attempt to answer that question about former Philadelphia wideout Freddie Mitchell, released by the Eagles on May 6, when they bring him in next week for an interview and workout. It is believed to be the first visit for Mitchell since his release, although agent Tom Condon has fielded preliminary inquires from other clubs as well.
"He's definitely going to be playing somewhere [in 2005], and we're going through the process of determining where the best situation might be," Condon said recently. "He needs to get to a place where he can get on the field and re-establish himself." Full Story |

GONZO: Sports Injury Prevention Specialist
|
I'll never forget my first major sports injury. Playing for Huntington Beach High in California during the 1993-94 season, I was on top of the world. I had 63 catches for 1,005 yards and 13 touchdowns. Then, right after catching my very first pass in a local all-star game, I spun around, and one guy grabbed me by my knee and another tackled me up high. I twisted like a pretzel. My knee exploded. I tore my MCL, or medial collateral ligament. The bad news about an MCL injury? It's as painful as can be. I was screaming on the ground. My teammates' faces froze with fear. I was carted off the field. The good news? As painful as it is, the MCL injury isn't nearly as serious as tearing an ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament. Full Story... |

Freddie Mitchell WR to try out for the Chiefs
|
Around the same time the Chiefs said goodbye to Johnnie Morton on Thursday, another receiver made plans to visit Kansas City.
Freddie Mitchell, an outspoken former Eagle who nicknamed himself “FredEx,” will work out for the Chiefs next week. President and general manager Carl Peterson confirmed Mitchell's visit late Thursday and said the Chiefs will do some bargain hunting in the coming weeks, specifically at receiver, but would sign someone only if they could get him on the cheap.
Mitchell might be in that category: He has been looking for work for nearly a month after being cut by Philadelphia.
“I guess I'm interested in seeing him come in and work out to see why he failed,” Peterson said. “Because he hasn't been able to be as productive as Philadelphia wished that he was. There has been something missing there. Can you find that and ignite it? Possibly.”Read More ... |

"Kawika Mitchell has a real feel for the game, but what I didn't see last year was a real take charge attitude," said defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. "I didn't see the attitude like, 'I'm the guy, I'm the leader' and that's what we've tried to develop in him all through the offseason, and we've made progress. FOX Sports KC Rundown

The Chiefs might be improved on defense this season, but one thing was evident from their spring practice sessions: They are much faster, particularly at linebacker. Veteran Kendrell Bell and rookie Derrick Johnson cover ground like no Chiefs' linebacker since at least Donnie Edwards, who left in 2001. Bell caught everyone's attention in a recent practice when he came across the field to chase down Priest Holmes on a screen pass. The Chiefs are privately impressed enough with both players that they're already thinking Shawn Barber and Scott Fujita could have trouble getting their starting jobs back. Barber and Fujita, the incumbent starters at outside linebacker, will miss the offseason practices because they are rehabbing from surgeries. . . .Full Rundown... |

Adam Teicher, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Kansas City Chiefs, barring a change of heart, don't plan to take away any of RB Priest Holmes' playing time in 2005 in favor of backup RB Larry Johnson. The Chiefs are resolute in their belief that using one featured back makes them more dangerous and more productive in the long run. As noted in a previous report, Johnson understands his current role on the team is being a backup to Holmes. |

Parker Looking to Make an Impact
|
Parker has been the star of the OTA's. After battling injuries for most of the 2004 NFL season, Oregon wide receiver Samie Parker found his way onto the field the last four games and started to show what that track speed could produce on the football field. Thus far in the OTA's, Parker has been the star of the offense and the Chiefs hope that effort continues in September whent the games really count.
No one is really worried about the Chiefs’ offense entering the 2005 season. The unit has ranked near the top of the NFL standings in total offense ever since offensive coordinator Al Saunders arrived in Kansas City. With all the footballs that have been flying around Arrowhead Stadium recently, is there actually a chance that the Chiefs’ offense could be even more explosive this season? If the recent mini-camps are any indicator, it just might be. Full Story |
