Chiefs report: Inside slant
|
A day before Brian Waters showed up for his first spring workout -- which he watched without participating in -- fellow Pro Bowl guard Will Shields also showed up for the first time.
But while Waters assured reporters that he had concrete plans to attend the mandatory mini-camp and be ready when training camp began in July, Shields sounded far less certain about his future.
Though his coaches and teammates generally believe that the 34-year-old Shields intends to play a 13th season in 2005, the intensely private 10-time Pro Bowler refuses to confirm his intentions to others. Inside slant Strategy and personnel Notes, quotes |

Chiefs remain in contact about Law
|
Playing the market Ty Law's agent, Carl Poston, said Law is not only running but is starting to make cuts and inching closer to being 100 percent as he recovers from foot surgery. Poston heard Friday from Jacksonville, which is in need of a cornerback and has cap room. He said the Jets, Colts, Dolphins, Steelers, and Chiefs have all stayed in contact. The Colts could be an interesting choice, because if they can broker a long-term deal with Edgerrin James, they'll have the cap room to come after Law. Poston expects that in 10 days Law will take another tour around the league so teams can gauge his progress. Asked whether Law could get a long-term deal, Poston said, ''I believe that's available to Ty."

Hunt May Consider Premiership
|
The Premiership could face an influx of more American interest if Manchester United's takeover by Malcolm Glazer is successful.
Clark Hunt, whose family own the Kansas City Chiefs in America and knows the Glazer family well, says a move into Europe, even the Premiership, is something that he would not rule out if things go according to plan at Old Trafford.
Hunt told Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "We are seeing the globalisation of sport all around the world. Of course, soccer or football, is really truly a world sport so it will be the vanguard of this globalisation. Full Story... |

HAKIM TO CHIEFS
|
HAKIM TO CHIEFS: Veteran wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim is close to signing a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, Saints coach Jim Haslett said.
Hakim told Saints officials he enjoyed his visit to New Orleans but favored Kansas City because of his relationship with Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil and familiarity with coordinator Al Saunders' offense. Hakim played two seasons in St. Louis when Vermeil coached the Rams.
Haslett said the Saints will continue to pursue a veteran to bolster the depth at receiver.
"We're always looking to upgrade our football team," Haslett said. "It doesn't really make a difference whether it's at that position. We have confidence that Devery (Henderson) will handle the job, but you're always looking to make your football team better. If there's someone who we feel can make our team better, then we'll look into the option." Full Story |

Chiefs could sign WR Hakim soon
|
KANSAS CITY - The Chiefs took a step closer to landing a free-agent receiver Thursday, and it appears as if Freddie Mitchell isn't a part of their plans.
Coach Dick Vermeil said the Chiefs are communicating with Az-Zahir Hakim's agent, and "when they're talking, you're going in the right direction."
Hakim and Mitchell came to Kansas City this week for workouts. Just before Hakim met with the coaches Tuesday, Vermeil suggested that they might sign both receivers if they went for the league minimum.
Asked Thursday whether Mitchell was still in the mix, Vermeil said, "No, I think we'll just do one, though I'd like to have them both. Plus, we have enough receivers, I think, of quality, and some young kids keep getting better, too." Full Story |

VERMEIL: “They’re talking to Az Hakim’s agent. There is communication going on.”
Q: But you don’t know if there is going to be a deal?
VERMEIL: “I don’t know if the deal is being made. If they’re talking they’re going in the right direction.”
Q: What about Mitchell?
VERMEIL: “Nah, I think we’ll just do one, though I’d like to have them both. Plus, we have enough receivers of quality and some young kids could get better too.”
Q: If Hakim came here how would he stack up?

SCANLON NAMED NFLEL DEFENSIVE MVP, CONNOT EARNS ALL-NFEL HONORS
|
The National Football League informed the Chiefs on Thursday that two players earned NFL Europe postseason honors. LB Rich Scanlon was named the NFLEL Defensive Most Valuable Player of the Year and earned first-team all-league honors for the Berlin Thunder. S Scott Connot was named first-team All-NFL Europe for his exploits for the Amsterdam Admirals.
Scanlon led the Thunder to a 7-3 regular season record and a berth in the World Bowl vs. Amsterdam. He started all 10 games for Berlin and led the league with a franchise single-season record 94 tackles (68 solo). The Syracuse product also added 3.0 sacks (-18.0 yards), five passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble and five special teams tackles. Scanlon finished the season with 68 solo tackles, a figure that was higher than the total tackle tally of any other player in the league.
Connot helped lead the Amsterdam Admirals to the World Bowl with a 6-4 record. He started all 10 games at safety for the club, leading the team with 66 tackles (57 solo), 10 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and seven special teams tackles. He tied for third in the league with four interceptions for 22 yards.
The South Dakota State native joined Kansas City as a rookie free agent in 2004, spending 12 weeks on the practice squad. Connot was promoted to the 53-man roster on December 9th and played in two games. He accumulated 234 tackles (142 solo) and eight interceptions as a three-year starter in college Full Story |

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL
|
Q: Do you anticipate a new receiver coming in from the ones you visited with this week?
DICK VERMEIL: “I don’t know. I think both receivers that were here really enjoyed their stay. I think we’ll make a move, or try to make a move on one of them and see what happens. I had a nice visit with Az (Hakim). When you’ve been as close to a player and gone through the experience that we did together in St. Louis there’s a bond. You’re excited to see him, whether he ends up here or not depends. He’s got other teams that are interested in him and we don’t have any money. But there’s always that possibility.”
Q: Is that the guy you want over Freddie Mitchell?
VERMEIL: “There’ll be more than one guy involved in that decision-making process. We’re debating those kinds of things right now.”
Q: Did you have a chance to speak to Brian Waters?
VERMEIL: “I said hello to him.”
Q: Did you encourage him to stick around?
VERMEIL: “No. If he wanted to practice he’d practice. He’s got some things right now on his mind that he’s got to get settled and we respect that and go on.”
Q: Is it a money thing?
VERMEIL: “No. it’s not. He’s doing what he thinks he has to do right now in a family situation.” Full Story |

Q&A G BRIAN WATERS
|
Q: Is it true that you haven’t been here because you have been holding out for more money?
WATERS: “No, that is not true. Definitely not true.”
Q: Where did all the rumors start?
WATERS: “I believe it is a natural deal when a guy is not around building an excuse. There was no reason for me or even the team to disclose my personal stuff. I really think it came from the media. I think you guys decided to come up with an excuse and it’s always money. You know as well as I do that it is an easy excuse to go out on to especially with me having probably the best season of my career and with the things going the way they are.”
Q: Coach Vermeil said he wanted you here, why aren’t you here?
WATERS: “I have plenty of work to do. Often, sometimes as a man and really I am a man before I am a football player I have to make some personal decisions. I have a brand new baby at home and have three young children. Football takes up a lot of our time and this is the off-season and these practices are a lot of fun but they are not mandatory. I made a personal decision to be at home with my family instead of being here.” Full Story |

KC: A possible landing spot for LT Verba

The Browns have given disgruntled left tackle Ross Verba permission to talk to other teams willing to trade for him.
They filed the necessary paperwork with the NFL office on Saturday, the same day L.J. Shelton signed a one-year contract, ostensibly to replace Verba.
General Manager Phil Savage said on Monday that the Browns have not formally closed the door on Verba returning to the team, but trading him would be the preference.
Chicago, Houston and Kansas City are teams still looking to upgrade their offensive lines.Read More ... |
