Matt Cassel, seen here practicing at the Chief's mini-camp, recently signed a deal guaranteeing the quarterback $28 million.

Blaylock moves to Big Apple

Leaving the Chiefs was not an easy decision, but in the end money was the decisive factor.

"You want to stay with one team your whole career, but that doesn't happen much these days. Guys move around. All of the Jets have been wonderful, and they've accepted me." Full story...

Phil Barber again: Re-dealing on defense

If the Vikings and Chiefs were two of those pale poker players who seem to dominate the cable TV spectrum these days, they'd be showering the table with cards. Tired of hoping for that one ace to complete a winning hand, they are restocking their defenses with massive redeals. Full Story...

Waiting for news of a possible suspension is no longer the hardest part of coming to work for Chiefs cornerback Eric Warfield.

Larry Johnson will score more fantasy points than Priest Holmes?

No, we'd never draft LJ ahead of Priest. We've been picking Johnson up as a RB3 or RB4 in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts (6-7). He's a nice gamble there. That's because we absolutely question the desire and health of Priest Holmes. Holmes is a player who talks about retirement every off-season. Respected Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock put it succinctly last year, "Holmes suffered a season-ending excuse to sit out the rest of the season," once his team was out of contention. The Chiefs originally expected Holmes back shortly after his MCL strain, and he missed eight games. No surgery was required. He'll be huge if healthy, but that isn't the type of guy we want to use a top five pick on. Source...

Ex-Ram runs an out, Mitchell may be in

Less than 48 hours after he donned a Chiefs jersey and said he couldn’t wait to play for his old coach, Az-Zahir Hakim was gone and coach Dick Vermeil was left scrambling for a Plan B.

Minicamp started on a strange note Friday, minus a newly signed receiver and in the middle of a new courtship for Freddie Mitchell. Vermeil said there was a “decent chance” they’d reach a deal with the chatty fifth-year veteran who nicknamed himself “FredEx,” “First-Down Freddie” and “The People’s Champ.”

“We’ll talk to him tonight,” Vermeil said of Mitchell. “He’s strong. Good hands. It’s another experienced football player out there who may be able to help this team.”

Hakim left town Thursday and is apparently on the verge of a deal with New Orleans. The former Rams receiver, an old friend of Vermeil’s, signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs on Wednesday. After watching an afternoon workout, where at least six receivers battled for his position, Hakim had second thoughts.

WR Hakim won't sign with Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Free agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim will not sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, coach Dick Vermeil said Friday.

The Chiefs said earlier this week that they had reached agreement on a one-year contract with Hakim, who played for Vermeil when the St. Louis Rams won the Super Bowl six years ago.

Hakim and his agent felt the wide receiver would fit in better somewhere else, Vermeil said.

"I was little disappointed, but I understand," Vermeil said. "That's just the nature of this game. You can't have everything you want."

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: What happened with Az Hakim?

DICK VERMEIL: “Az and his agent got together and they really felt his best situation was not here for him. Then he and I discussed it. I told you all along that I wanted what was best for him and I think he’s going to end up in New Orleans.

“I was little disappointed, but I understand. That’s just the nature of this game. You can’t have everything you want.”

Q: Why wasn’t it a better situation for him? Was it contract related?

VERMEIL: “Everything’s related: the total situation wasn’t as good. You’re trying to get somebody for the minimum and somebody else’s is offering you more. I think he did what anyone else would do.”

Q: Are you bringing anyone else in?

VERMEIL: “We might.”

Q: Freddie Mitchell?

VERMEIL: ‘We might. We’re in contact with Freddie because we had him in here before.”

Q: Did Az have expectations that maybe were higher than they might have been? Did he think he might be a starter?

Q&A QB TRENT GREEN

Q: How did having two of your Pro Bowl lineman here today feel and go?

GREEN: “They look good. It’s obvious both of them have been working. Anytime you don’t see the guys or they aren’t around on a day-to-day basis you always wonder what they have been up to. It was clear both of them have worked hard by the way they looked and how well they were moving. Brian Waters looks like he has added some size and strength which is hard to do when you’re as big as him.”

Q: What kind of change of pace is there since there is a mandatory mini-camp?

GREEN: “Everything is a little longer. The majority of the guys who have been out here today have been out here for the entire OTAs. The meetings are longer since we are putting in more things. We watch more film, the meetings are longer, practices are longer. Your allowed to have more individual work, more one on one work. It’s just that now your allowed more team under the rules. The tempo isn’t much different today than it was in the OTAs. It is nice to see everybody fly around. You get more of a package in now that we are winding down in the off-season. Most of the offense and defensive packages are installed. Now we are working on most of Red Zone stuff, two-minute things, third down stuff so you get to pin-point certain things.”

Knight won't make much impact?

Tully Car Guy asks a football question: How much difference will Sammy Knight make to his Chiefs?

Oh, not as much as I would have guessed two years ago. I thought he was kind of a ball-hawking hotshot, going to the Dolphins from the Saints. His two years there have been pretty decent but nothing to get excited about. Regarding the KC secondary, Greg Wesley is a hitter, not a great cover guy. Jerome Woods is about through. Speed is what's needed all throughout the defensive backfield, and I don't think Knight will give them that. Plus, he'll be 30 when the season starts Source....

It’s the offense, not defense, that worries Vermeil most

After several weeks of offseason practices and with minicamp on the horizon, Dick Vermeil’s primary concern is … the Chiefs’ offense?

There must be a plausible explanation. Is it wishful thinking about a defense that’s been lousy for too long, or the result of intuition sharpened by 34 years of coaching? Full Story

Tony Gonzalez Makes 10,000th Handoff of Career

Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez has reached many milestones throughout the course of his eight NFL seasons. The six-time Pro Bowl performer began his onslaught on the Chiefs record book shortly after being selected13th overall in the 1997 NFL Draft out of California. However, one of his most important watermarks occurred this week as he distributed his 10,000 Shadow Buddy at Parkville’s Camp Systole.

Standing at the same site he distributed his very first Shadow Buddy eight years ago, Gonzalez was on hand with special “Heart Buddies” for those in attendance. Held in conjunction with Children’s Mercy Hospital, the event afforded the campers the opportunity to get a “buddy” who is just like them. Each of the buddies distributed on the day had an incision down the chest and a mended red heart. They also were dressed in Kansas City Chiefs shorts and a t-shirt with Tony’s name and #88 on the back.

Vets work on rest/Roaf, Shields get a break from the hits

Willie Roaf and Will Shields may not be fine pieces of china destined to break into thousands of worthless pieces at the first hint of contact.

But the Chiefs are handling their two veteran offensive linemen that way this offseason, so both ambled out to practice Tuesday shortly before the session ended. Shields observed while Roaf ran some sprints under the watchful eye of conditioning coach Billy Long.

When he was finished, Roaf gave some thanks for his excused practice absences, something predictable from a 35-year-old with occasionally balky knees.

Q&A WR AZ HAKIM

Q: Was it an easy decision to come to Kansas City?

HAKIM: “No, I wouldn’t say it was easy. I just took my time and weighed my options. I wanted it to be the right situation. I thought I fit well here.”

Q: I heard that you had offers from other teams but what was so attractive about this?

HAKIM: “Mainly for one offensively and scheme-wise and what they do and how my routes are already developed for this type of offense Coach Saunders and Dick Vermeil run. Offensively their type of structure for me is right so I thought it would be an ideal situation.

Q: Coach Vermeil said nothing was guaranteed, you must compete like everyone else, what is your outlook?

HAKIM: “Yes, absolutely nothing is guaranteed and that is just the nature of this business. I have to go out there and compete just like everyone else. There are no guarantees but I am going to go out there and leave everything on the field. ”

Q: Are you healthy because I know in Detroit you had your injuries here and there?

HAKIM: “Absolutely, I am healthy. I had a dislocated hip in 2002. I have been playing ever since then and haven’t had any problems with my hip. I had a loose body part as far as my knee concerned. You are going to get your nicks and injuries in a place football of your career. I came back from my hip injury and I feel really good right now as far as my body movement. I have been working real hard this off-season. I feel good about my decision and where I am at.”

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: You had number 80 (Az Hakim) suited up today.

DICK VERMEIL: “Yeah, but we didn’t have him do anything other than get broken in and attend meetings this morning, just to orientate him with the offense and to watch everyone else work.”

Q: Will he be taking part tomorrow in OTA’s?

VERMEIL: “Maybe a little bit, but we want to make sure he knows what he’s doing and gets back into it. It’ll take him a while but we’re not going to push him real hard these next few days. In fact, we won’t come on the field tomorrow afternoon. We’re going to weight train, do all the meetings and do running and training, drop the practice but come back on Friday.”

Q: How much stuff does he have to learn having been through the system before?

VERMEIL: “The foundation of the system is the same, but there are always little individual nuances within each scheme regardless of where they originated. They’ll do different things. Al (Saunders) runs the offense different than Mike (Martz) does in St. Louis. Yet, the basis and the foundation is the same.”

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: Is Az Hakim going to be here for mini-camp?

DICK VERMEIL: “I think he will be, maybe as of tomorrow night. I haven’t talked to him.”

Q: Can you talk how he fits in?

VERMEIL: “Al (Saunders) and I and Mike White and Peter Giunta and Carl (Hairston) and all the guys who coached him at the Rams know that he was real talent at that time. And, if he’s anywhere close to what he was then he’ll have a very good chance to make a strong contribution to this offense here. He knows it.

“What he’ll come here first to do is compete. He’s going to have to compete and he knows that. I didn’t really actively recruit hard to get him. I wanted him to come on his own, to determine what is best for him. There’s more receivers on our field today that will be compete for one of those positions than we’ve ever had since I’ve been here.”

Q: Why did he decide to finally do this?

VERMEIL: “You’d have to ask him. I think he’s familiar with the coaches, familiar with the offense, has been coached by Al Saunders at the wide receiver position, he’s played under me before, and he knows our routine and how we do things.”

Trent Green Hosts Charity Golf Tournament

Kansas City Chiefs QB Trent Green knows a thing or two about performing in the clutch. As the pilot at the controls of one of the NFL’s most prolific offensives, Green has been routinely called upon to come through when it counts most. Apparently, the Missouri native and two-time team MVP is quite adept at making the correct read both on the field and in the community. This week, Green hosted his fourth annual charity golf tournament from Belton, Missouri’s Loch Lloyd Country Club. The event once again went to benefit the Trent Green Family Foundation.

“Any time that I can help make a difference in the surrounding community, it’s important to me,” the 11-year NFL pro said. “From the moment that my family and I arrived here, we were greeted with open arms. This is just a small way that I can help repay Kansas City for all of the hospitality that I’ve been shown throughout the years.”
