John Alt interested in arena team

Arenafootball2 officials want a franchise operating in Des Moines next season at Wells Fargo Arena.

Jerry Kurz, president of the league, said Tuesday that there "is no market we would like back in the arena football family any more than Des Moines."

Former Kansas City Chiefs lineman John Alt confirmed recently that he is interested in purchasing the dormant franchise belonging to former Iowa Barnstormer owner Jim Foster. Foster is majority owner and operates the af2 Quad City Steamwheelers

Ten-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields is apparently set to return for his 13th season.

Ten-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields, the cornerstone of the Chiefs' offensive line and one of the most celebrated blockers in recent NFL history, is apparently set to return for his 13th season.

After spending much of the offseason contemplating retirement, Shields told participants in his annual charity golf tournament Thursday that he will play at least one more season. Shields, who will turn 34 shortly after the regular-season opener, has not participated in any of the Chiefs' on-field activities in the offseason. Coach Dick Vermeil and general manager Carl Peterson had essentially excused Shields from the offseason program so that he could have time to determine his future.

The Capital-Journal, citing the Associated Press, reports Kansas City Chiefs OG Will Shields confirmed Thursday, June 23, that he would play a 13th season in 2005. Speaking at a charity golf tournament he hosts, Shields said his body felt healthy enough now that he feels up to playing. Former chiefs FB Easy signs with Raiders

FROM ESPN:
The team has signed former Kansas City fullback Omar Easy to a one-year contract with a base salary of $455,000.

Easy, 27, appeared in 37 games for the Chiefs in three seasons, primarily on special teams. The former Penn State standout notched four rushing attempts for one yard and had six receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown. He also had 11 special teams tackles.

Originally a fourth-round choice in the 2002 draft, Easy became an unrestricted free agent this spring when Kansas City did not make him a restricted free-agent qualifying offer to retain a right of first refusal on him.

To create a roster spot for Easy, the Raiders released defensive lineman Mark Word, signed as a free agent earlier this offseason. Source...

Chiefs' Allen up-and-coming

Don't mention the words "sophomore slump" to Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen. Not without ducking first.

"That's a bunch of (nonsense)," snaps the second-year player who led Kansas City in sacks with nine last season as a rookie.

"Most of his sacks he's really earned by whipping somebody," Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil said of Jared Allen.

"I know there was stuff I got away with my first year that people will be watching for this year," Allen says. "I know people are expecting more this time around, and they'll be more critical if I don't get the job done. But that's the way it should be. That's the challenge I accept." Gado grabs attention

The video was sitting somewhere in a pile, lost in the shuffle of the 2005 draft. Truth is, there was nothing remarkable about it. Sam Gado is running. He looks strong and fast. He’s the third-string running back at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

The story could end there, with the video filed in a circular basket, only Gado’s coach is former NFL quarterback Ken Karcher. He’s an old friend of Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders. He’s persistent. In the last phone call, Karcher says something that sticks in Saunders’ head.

“I guarantee you that Sam Gado will bless your life as well as the lives of others in that organization,” he says. Full Story

The next Derrick?

The rookie really needs to work on his timing.

Not his timing on the field, mind you, for there was nothing mistimed at all about Derrick Johnson's head-turning highlight play of the Chiefs recent minicamp.

It's just too bad that only those with access to Kansas City's Friday practice video will ever see the way the Chiefs' first-round draft pick broke up a would-be screen pass after blowing in from his strong-side linebacker position. Full Story

D. Johnson Eager to Quiet Analysts' Concerns - from KFFL.com

Chiefs | D. Johnson Eager to Quiet Analysts' Concerns
Wed, 22 Jun 2005 11:51:05 -0700

Rick Dean, of the Topeka Capital-Journal, reports Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson is eager to work on the concerns many draft analysts had on him prior to the NFL Draft. Analysts said that Johnson might not be as strong as he needs to be and was not a strong tackler. "I'm coachable," Johnson said, "and the things that were knocks on me are things we can work on. The coaches here have seen that and know that I can improve on the things I did in college. I think I'm making the adjustment OK, but it's going to get tougher when the pads go on in training camp and they throw more new stuff at me. But as long as I keep going out with the enthusiasm to get better, that's the main point."

Colquitt could kick Chiefs’ punting woes

The high, arching punts of rookie Dusty Colquitt were an offseason delight for the Chiefs. His kicks gave them reason to believe their punting problems of recent years are finished.

But the show doesn’t end when Colquitt’s kicks begin their journey back to earth. They inevitably do a dance that leaves returners staggering just to make a clean catch, much less bust loose for long yardage.

Colquitt’s kicks consistently baffled even veteran and sure-handed returners such as Dante Hall and Eddie Kennison. In offseason practices, both players fought Colquitt’s punts with all they had. Full Story

Mitchell (6-7, 257) originally entered the NFL as the first of two seventh-round draft choices (227th overall) by Denver in the 2003 draft. He spent the past two springs playing for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. He saw action in 20 games (13 starts) for the Admirals, recording 43 tackles (36 solo) and 6.0 sacks (-34.0 yards). Losing Battle leaves Chiefs short at corner

Suitcases rolled out of Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, veterans said their goodbyes, and coach Dick Vermeil gave his speech about how nobody wants to be the guy who loses his job because he spent a month on the couch with a bag of chips.

Summer vacation officially started late Sunday with the end of minicamp, but the mood wasn’t exactly festive. The Chiefs are now looking for a starting cornerback.

Vermeil said cornerback Julian Battle is out for the season because of a torn Achilles’ tendon. Battle, who had been elevated to the first team earlier this month, suffered the injury in Saturday’s workout and will undergo surgery on his left heel

Chiefs Report From FoxSports.com

The signing of Freddie Mitchell gives the Chiefs some veteran insurance at wide receiver in case Samie Parker isn't ready for a full-time role. Parker will be given the first shot to win one of the starting spots, but Mitchell could take it from him by being a standout at training camp. But it's not a given Mitchell will even make the team. Mitchell could be released prior to the season's start if he's outplayed by Parker, Richard Smith, Marc Boerigter or Chris Horn. . . .

By playing so well in NFL Europe, Rich Scanlon emerged as a viable alternative as a potential starter at middle linebacker if the incumbent, Kawika Mitchell, doesn't improve. Scanlon is a good athlete and runs well. In Europe, he showed good instincts, tackling skills and the ability to shed blockers. Mitchell struggled in all three areas last season

SI: K.C. has taken big steps to bolster D, but is it enough?

I visited Chiefs camp last Wednesday, and one player stood out above the rest: Derrick Johnson. He's the rookie linebacker from Texas taken by Kansas City in the first round in April, and he's fast. Really fast. I got a chance to watch him on the practice field, unpadded, as offense played defense in a non-contact, play-installation drill. If he's this good when they put the pads on -- which, of course, nobody knows yet, and it's silly to pretend one workout can portend greatness -- the Chiefs might finally have the really good linebacker they've been lacking since the death of Derrick Thomas. Chiefs | More on Replacing Battle

Chiefs | More on Replacing Battle
Sun, 19 Jun 2005 19:10:34 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil said the team is not going to panic due to the loss of CB Julian Battle for the season. One free agent the Chiefs took a pass on last spring was CB Ty Law (Patriots). Law is still on the market, but Vermeil said it was unclear whether the Chiefs would do any more defensive shopping. Money or lack of it is the biggest issue for the Chiefs. Both Vermeil and president/general manager Carl Peterson have said that the Chiefs used up most of their cap space on free agents and trades. "We'll look," Vermeil said. "But I don't know what's out there - and then we'll also more deeply evaluate those young people we have. But we have time."

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: What was the ceremony involving your wife at midfield?

DICK VERMEIL: “Thanking her for the team dinners and that stuff.”

Q: How is Julian Battle?

VERMEIL: “He’s going to be operated on. He popped his Achilles tendon and he’s lost for the year.”

Q: What are you going to do? Are you going to look outside?

VERMEIL: “I don’t know yet. We’ll look, but I don’t know what’s out there. We’ll also more deeply evaluate those young people we have. We have time. We’re not going to panic.”

Q: That is a shock to you considering he was practicing with the first team. Isn’t this a very big concern to you?

VERMEIL: “I’m more concerned about him because he’s been here for two years and was going into his third year and was just starting to find out what it takes to be a pro football player. We’ve known for a long time that he has the ability to be one and he was really demonstrating that all through these OTA’s and mini-camp. It’s part of the game.”

Chiefs report: Notes, quotes

The Chiefs literally took the ball out of quarterback's Trent Green's hands during their first mini-camp session Friday (July 17).

Green, who said he has been throwing and training since the Monday after the Pro Bowl, had been advised by trainers and coaches to back down his throwing in the offseason program in order to avoid arm soreness. He did not throw during a Wednesday on-field coaching session, and only did handoffs in a 9-on-7 running drill in the Friday mini-camp

Despite many new faces, Chiefs are already bonding

They met over basketball, which seems kind of strange because Lional Dalton is a 315-pound defensive tackle, and Patrick Surtain is a Pro Bowl cornerback. Dalton was a Pistons fan. Surtain, who just joined the Chiefs from Miami, was rooting for the Heat. They'd meet on the Plaza to watch the NBA playoffs, just Dalton, Surtain and a gaggle of their defensive buddies. And a friendship was forged.

"You have to have a thick skin in this locker room," Dalton said Saturday as his teammates played cards and watched the U.S. Open around him. "We have a lot of comedians. A lot of guys, when they get big contracts, they come in and have big heads. These guys just fit right in. You'd think these guys were free agents off the street or something. They work hard.

Q&A with DICK VERMEIL

Q: Is Freddie Mitchell signed, sealed and delivered?

DICK VERMEIL: “Yes he is. Freddie has signed with us and we’re very happy to have him here with us. He’s happy to be here. He’s an experienced receiver, a first round pick and one that we also rated a first round pick when he came out. He’s a good friend of mine; his attitude’s real good and Andy Reid gave him an outstanding recommendation.

“So we’ll give him a shot. It’ll be tough; it’ll be very competitive.”

Q: Is he going to be in the same position as Az Hakim, that he has to compete for a job? Nothing is guaranteed.

VERMEIL: “Nothing is guaranteed. He knows that. All he wants is an opportunity. We’ll give him an opportunity, but it’ll be very intense competition.”

Q: Will this be a good thing for him because of what he went through in Philadelphia last year?

VERMEIL: “I think anytime you get a fresh start it’s good and he’ll start fresh. I’m sure as a young receiver he made some mistakes in Philadelphia like they all do, like we all do. I think he’s matured and will do a good job in competing.”

Q&A WR FREDDIE MITCHELL

Q: Could you talk about signing here and do you feel like second fiddle after Az Hakim ended up going in another direction?

MITCHELL: “Az Hakim is a great receiver. He knows the offense. I would have chose Az Hakim because he can come right in. He has been with Coach Vermeil before so it’s not really second fiddle. If you have football experience and you know about the game of football it’s two different offenses so it’s really not second fiddle.”

Q: The Chiefs are a team who have led the league in yards or second in scoring, how exciting is that to you?

MITCHELL: “It’s very exciting and in this offense it opens you up. With a West Coast offense you have to open yourself up. The plays are going to be there for me to make a play. I just want to help the team win and hopefully be utilized catching the ball. I am happy to be here. Unfortunately Az Hakim couldn’t come for reasons but I am happy and will make the best out of this.”

Q: Do you see a starting opportunity here?

MITCHELL: “It’s really the embryonic stage right now. There is a lot of learning to do. I have to meet Coach Joiner and study the playbook. There is definitely a lot of good competition out here. There are a lot of good young guys out here that are fighting for starting positions. This position is not giving to me I will have to earn it.”

Q: Did they give you any insurance on the issue about playing or starting?

MITCHELL: “This is the NFL. No job is guaranteed. Every year there is a young guy coming at you wanting to take your spot.”

Q: What do you bring to the Kansas City Chiefs?

MITCHELL: “I definitely have Super Bowl experience. If you look at the Eagles they are one of the big teams. They win and know how to win. I know how to do things professionally and I am a class work. I am a mean guy on the field.”
