Law offered contract by BUCS

Update: Law has received a contract proposal from the Buccaneers, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

Recommendation: "He's one of several free agents we're looking at," Tampa Bay GM Bruce Allen said Wednesday. Terms of the offer are not known, but at this point the Bucs don't have a whole lot of wiggle room under the cap, so it would surprise us if the deal is close to what Law is looking for. Law, who is recovering from a foot injury and has indicated that he is about 85 percent back, says the Jaguars, Jets, Dolphins, Chiefs and Colts also have expressed an interest in signing him. Source

Chiefs | Unlikely to Land Law?-KFFL.com

Chiefs | Unlikely to Land Law?
Wed, 29 Jun 2005 20:32:30 -0700

Bob Gretz, of KCChiefs.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are only currently capable of offering free agent CB Ty Law (Patriots) a minimum-salary deal with some big incentives built in, which makes the team's chances of landing Law slim. The Chiefs only other alternative would be to release some high-salaried players to free up room under this year's cap. However, that would have a bad effect on the Chiefs' cap next year with acceleration on signing bonuses of the players released.

Alex Marvez slams Law and the Postons; agrees that Chiefs have lost interest

LAW LAID DOWN: Funny coincidence that "Ty Law" and "greed" are each composed of five letters.

In 2004, the cornerback was offered $16 million in guaranteed money by New England to rework his contract. Law actually declined the offer, with the Providence Journal reporting that his agents, Carl and Kevin Poston, tried countering with a deal asking for $20 million instead.Read More ...

In the Trenches: Tomlinson, Holmes head AFC West studs

The most important news in Kansas City revolves around RB Priest Holmes, who appears to be 100 percent recovered from the injured knee that forced him to miss eight starts last season. He should remain a top-five choice in all drafts, but owners who land him must also target RB Larry Johnson as insurance.

Gunther Cunningham, an assistant coach under pressure.

Gunther Cunningham, Chiefs
Defensive coordinator

With the additions of DE Carlos Hall, LBs Kendrell Bell and Derrick Johnson, CB Patrick Surtain and S Sammy Knight, Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has the players he wanted. Now he must make the unit a success. But he won't have the luxury of time. The Chiefs expect to be Super Bowl contenders, and the first-month schedule includes no easy, confidence-boosting games.Read More ...

Warfield awaits decision after DUI

Normally this time of year Kansas City Chiefs' cornerback Eric Warfield would be concerned with his physical conditioning and the team's brutal opening stretch against the Jets, Raiders, Broncos and Eagles.

Normally.

But this hasn't been a normal year for Warfield, the former Arkansas High and University of Nebraska standout who's about to enter his eighth National Football League season. That's because the 29-year-old doesn't know when he'll play his next NFL game. Full Story

Warfield Likes Defensive Upgrades-KFFL.com

Chiefs | Warfield Likes Defensive Upgrades
Tue, 28 Jun 2005 09:57:14 -0700

Richard Thomas, of the Texarkana Gazette, reports Kansas City Chiefs CB Eric Warfield said he likes the acquisitions the Chiefs have made on defense this past offseason. "I feel very good about the team bringing in (LB) Kendrell Bell, (DE) Carlos Hall, (SS) Sammy Knight, (CB Patrick) Surtain (cornerback), and for drafting (LB) Derrick Johnson from Texas. I know every other team has made upgrades to their team, but I like our chances. "I mean when you've got the No. 1 offense, that means you're always going to put points on the board. But whenever you can go out there with a strong defense, it helps you that much more to know that you can go out and stop high-caliber teams like New England."Read More ...

Law is still in picture, Ambrose remains favorite

As week two of the Chiefs’ search for a cornerback began Monday, Ashley Ambrose emerged as the realistic favorite, and Ty Law kept his spot somewhere high on the speed dial.

Coach Dick Vermeil said Monday night that the Chiefs are “very interested” in Ambrose, a 13-year veteran who worked out in Kansas City late last week. The holdup, at least in part, is Law, the Pro Bowl corner who visited the Chiefs in March and is still on the market.

The Chiefs want Law if he will sign for a dramatically reduced price. But Law, who just began making cuts on his surgically repaired foot, reportedly wants big money. Full Story

Thorpe a Long Shot?-KFFL.COM

Chiefs | Thorpe a Long Shot?
Mon, 27 Jun 2005 20:52:12 -0700

Bob Gretz, of KCChiefs.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Craphonso Thorpe may have a hard time finding a spot on the active roster in 2005, as he's part of about a half-dozen players fighting for what figures to be one wide receiver spot. Thorpe should land on the practice squad if he doesn't make the active roster.Read More ...

More rumors on why Hakim left

But [Az-Zahir] Hakim left Kansas City abruptly and headed south. He declined to discuss the reasons, although it was speculated that he bolted after the Chiefs refused to guarantee him a roster spot. "I'm a New Orleans Saint; that's it," said Hakim, 28. "When I first took the trip (to New Orleans), the guys made it so comfortable for me. . . . I just had a gut feeling that I wanted to be in New Orleans, so I pretty much re-chose. Dick Vermeil understood what the deal was, and he let me go. It was a decision I had to make."

Chiefs RePort from FoxSports.com

Rookie P Dustin Colquitt needs to works on his consistency, but he gave the Chiefs during offseason practices reason to believe their punting problems of recent years are finished. The left-footed Colquitt's punts proved consistently difficult for even normally sure-handed returners like Dante Hall and Eddie Kennison to field because of their hang time and unique rotation. Both dropped balls, made tentative grabs or simply gave up and let the punts be downed. The Chiefs believe his hard-to-catch punts will lead to a big number of turnovers. . . .

Kris Wilson back at full strength

Kris Wilson hesitated. Maybe he was going too fast. For two months last summer, Wilson was the buzz, the hype, the legend of River Falls, Wis. He caught just about everything thrown his way. He caught the eye of the Chiefs’ coaches. And here was the best thing — Wilson was only a rookie.

“You couldn’t help but notice him at training camp,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders said. “You would come off the field saying, ‘Wow, he’s an impressive player.’ ” Full Story

Collins in it for the long haul

In a league with such high coaching turnover, it's remarkable that Walpole's Todd Collins, now 32, is entering his eighth season as a backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.

He's played for Marty Schottenheimer (1998), Gunther Cunningham (1999-2000) and Dick Vermeil (2001-present), and realizes it's rare to have stuck around for so long because coaches often like to bring in their own players.

Inside Slant

Watching starting cornerback candidate Julian Battle go down and out for the season with an non-contact Achilles tendon injury was the lowlight of an open practice session that drew 15,570 fans to Arrowhead Stadium during the Chiefs minicamp June 18.

But coach Dick Vermeil did his best to end things on a high note as he addressed the faithful after the two-hour session.

These guys will bust out on offense

Yahoo! Sports:
You might not be familiar with Jordan Black, but Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis knows who he is. Black pancaked Lewis in a Monday game last season. The favorite to start at right tackle for the Chiefs, Black will be playing among a cluster of Pro Bowl players -- left tackle Willie Roaf, left guard Brian Waters, right guard Will Shields and tight end Tony Gonzalez. He also will be blocking for Priest Holmes, one of the game's most dazzling runners. Source...
