BR: Chiefs RB Charles Already Passes LJ as Season Rushing Leader
|
|
Well, that was quick. Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles passed Larry Johnson as the season rushing leader. Charles has 406 yards while LJ had 377 as a Chief. The amazing part of it? Charles did it in 54 less carries than LJ. Yep, 54. That's about two games worth for LJ when he was a Chief. continue reading... |

Jenkins: Chambers returns to challenge old friends
|
Whatever the problem, it was between him and the coaching staff, him
and the front office. And the problem was big — big enough that the
Chargers simply cut Chris Chambers loose. Just flat gave him his
release, showed him the door.
Presently, however, he's the problem of his former teammates.
“I know they know some things that I do good and I know some things
that they do good,” said Chambers, asked about facing a secondary he's
practiced against on a daily basis. “The fact is that in practice, they
kinda gamble, they kinda sit on routes more, not worried about getting
beat too much. You get beat too much in practice, it doesn't hurt, and
you go right back to the huddle.

PFT: Chiefs' Charles is AFC special teams player of the week
|
Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has an expanded role on
offense now that Larry Johnson is gone. But he's still returning
kickoffs, and his efforts as a kick returner led him to receive the AFC special teams player of the week award.
Charles returned the opening kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown
against the Steelers on Sunday, getting the Chiefs on the board first
on the way to an overtime upset of Pittsburgh. continue reading...

USA Today: Rookie Focus: Chiefs' Succop proving anything but irrelevant
|
|
Ryan Succop gained the dubious honor of being
"Mr. Irrelevant" when he was the 256th and final player selected in
April's NFL draft.
He could not have been more relevant on Sunday,
when his 22-yard field goal in overtime lifted the Kansas City Chiefs
to a shocking 27-24 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium. The upset of the defending Super Bowl
champions ended a franchise-worst 10-game home losing streak for Kansas
City and brought national attention to Succop and the solid rookie
season he is enjoying for the rebuilding Chiefs.
He has converted 16-of-20 field-goal attempts
with a long of 53 yards. He has made all but one of his five tries
between 40 and 49 yards and is flawless on all 15 of his extra-point
tries.
USA TODAY takes a closer look at Succop:
THE PLAYER
• Ht.: 6-2 Wt.: 218.
• Hometown: Hickory, N.C.
• College highlights: Played in 50 games
at South Carolina, converting 49 of 69 field goal attempts (71%) with a
career long of 55 yards. Nailed all but two of his 106 extra-point
tries. Finished with 251 points, second-highest total in school
history. Had 69 touchbacks on 192 kickoffs. Handled punting and kicking
duties as sophomore and junior.

Covitz: The watershed win
|
|
It's still early in the Scott Pioli/Todd Haley regime, but to me,
the Chiefs' stunning upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers was reminiscent
of the watershed moment of the 1990s.
Remember Oct. 7, 1991? The defending AFC Champion Buffalo Bills,
featuring future Hall of Famers Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith
and coach Marv Levy came into Arrowhead Stadium for a Monday-night
game.
Now, the Chiefs weren't the decided underdogs in that game the way
they were on Sunday. Heck, they might have even been favored.
The Chiefs were in their third year under general manager Carl
Peterson and head coach Marty Schottenheimer and already had posted two
winning seasons in KC and went to the playoffs in 1990. continue reading...

Chiefs stun Steelers in OT
|
|
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Ryan Succop kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime, as the Kansas City Chiefs erased a 10-point halftime deficit to stun the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-24, at Arrowhead Stadium. The game-winning boot was set up by a 61-yard passing play between Matt Cassel and Chris Chambers on third down. Cassel finished 15-of-30 through the air for 248 yards and two touchdowns for the Chiefs (3-7), who snapped a 10-game losing streak at home. Jamaal Charles opened the scoring with a kickoff return and his two-yard grab drew Kansas City even with 4:54 to play in fourth quarter. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 32-of-42 passes for 398 yards with three touchdowns, but was picked off twice before exiting the game in the extra session after being struck in the head by the knee of Derrick Johnson. Rashard Mendenhall had 80 yards on 21 carries for the Steelers (6-4), who have lost two straight. |

Harris: Experience becomes issue for Chiefs' Haley
|
|
Of the 32 current head coaches in the NFL, Todd Haley is the only one who didn't play college football.
College playing experience didn't appear to be a prerequisite to
becoming an NFL coach until former Penn State standout Larry Johnson
publicly mocked the fact that Haley played golf and not football in
college.
It was an unnecessary distraction for Haley, an Upper St. Clair grad
whose 2-7 Kansas City Chiefs host the 6-3 Steelers today at Arrowhead
Stadium.
"I knew it was a big job coming in,'' said Haley, a rookie NFL head
coach and the son of long-time Steelers and New York Jets director of
player personnel Dick Haley. "I don't think it's for the faint of heart.
"Obviously, we're going to be judged on wins and losses. We've got
two wins — that's not enough. But as far as working every day and
seeing what we have, it's continuing to improve and move in a positive
direction. We're in the beginning of trying to turn this team into a
winning team.'' continue reading...
