While studying film of the Chiefs this week, Mathias Kiwanuka started to wonder if the cut-ups from Kansas City’s loss to Philadelphia were even worthwhile to watch. The Eagles brought blitz after blitz after blitz last Sunday, at an almost preposterous rate.

“It looked ridiculous,” the Giants defensive end said with a chuckle. “It was almost tough to get a good read on how the Chiefs would react to normal situations, because they blitzed them so much.”

Giants middle linebacker Antonio Pierce estimated the Eagles sent at least one extra rusher on about 60 percent of the plays and showed all-out blitz one-quarter of the time. That’s a clip the Giants, despite running a similar defense to Philadelphia, don’t expect to match in Kansas City Sunday.

But after the success the Eagles had with their high-pressure approach last week — quarterback Matt Cassel threw for just 90 yards, and the winless Chiefs were 0-for-11 on third down — it’s a logical time for the Giants to dial up their blitz beyond what they have shown in the first three weeks.

It’s not enough that the offensive linemen have always been the most anonymous and generally least appreciated players on any football team. The tackles, guards and center must also begin each play in the dark, so to speak. It’s no wonder every coach since Pop Warner has stressed the importance of continuity in the offensive line.

What makes for better front office management in the NFL? Does success stream to those who are impulsive, gutsy, and spontaneous, or formulaic, cautionary, and evaluative?

The answer resembles a successful NFL offense in that a balanced approach is typically best. Continuing from the offseason and into 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs have seen an overhaul of the team conducted with reactionary fervor and tempered patience. 

Quarterback Tyler Thigpen’s trade to Miami is a testament to the knowledge of Chief’s general manager Scott Pioli.  With the reel Thigpen made for himself in 11 starts for Kansas City last year in which he put up numbers comparable to current Chief’s starter Matt Cassel (albeit out of the spread offense), Thigpen became a marketable commodity.

Todd Haley today made it sound like the Chiefs granted veteran linebacker and special teams player Monty Beisel his wish by releasing him.

The Chiefs began training camp with Zach Thomas and Derrick Johnson as their starting inside linebackers. They passed over Beisel and eventually made their way to Corey Mays and Demorrio Williams as their starters.

Then, last week in Philadelphia, rookie Jovan Belcher, an undrafted free agent, came in for Mays and Haley indicated Belcher would continue to play even if he doesn't start.
