Matt Cassel, seen here practicing at the Chief's mini-camp, recently signed a deal guaranteeing the quarterback $28 million.

MVN: Kansas City Chiefs Wave the White Flag

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, left, watches as ...

I tried something new yesterday.

My son was getting baptized, and the ceremony followed noon mass - which doesn't bode well for a 12:00 p.m. CST kickoff for the Kansas City good guys and someone who wants to watch the game.  So - I set my DVR, went to the service and planned on watching the game when I got home.

(I knew something wasn't going right when, midway through the baptism, my buddy J-Bear let out an audible sigh and kicked the pew.  He may have dropped the ill-advised F-bomb in church, too - but I can neither confirm nor deny that.)

So - I got home and immediately started watching the game on "2X" - twice the speed of normal play.  I saw the Chiefs go a thrilling 3-and-out twice, seem to forget that LeSean McCoy was on the field, watch the Philadelphia Eagles' fans inexplicably give Michael Vick a standing ovation, and Larry Johnson officially give up on the season.  To LJ's credit, he lasted three games longer than I expected him to.

Whitlock: Pioli, Haley create KC's worst team

That was not fun. Or entertaining. Or promising. Or anything positive.

It was a three-hour ordeal, the Kansas City Chiefs’ venture into Lincoln Financial Field, which ended with a 34-14 Eagles victory.

We watched it. Or listened to it. Or heard about it.

Think about the 46 Chiefs players who suffered through it. Whatever level of disgust or disappointment you felt witnessing the Philadelphia Eagles demoralize your favorite team, multiply your angst by 20, and then you’ll know what those three hours felt like to the average Chiefs player.

Bob Ford: Chiefs simply had no chance

On the other hand, a little uncertainty isn't such a bad thing.

Not knowing exactly how the season will work out for the Eagles, how they will hold together despite injuries and some inexperience at important positions, all of that doesn't seem as terrible after you get a look at the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs know exactly how this season is going to come out for them.

It is still September, but the winds of a long fall and the coming winter have already blown holes in whatever aspirations the Chiefs had for 2009. New head coach Todd Haley might have to scurry just to equal the 2-14 record that got Herm Edwards fired after last season.

There are also a few football issues here in Philadelphia, but just be happy they aren't the same ones facing the team that dressed quickly in a stone-quiet locker room this afternoon and left town without making so much as a wide divot in the field.

PFT: Dorsey showing signs of life

Anyone who happened to watch the Chiefs and Raiders game last week couldn't help noticing defensive end Glenn Dorsey's disruptive day.

This was only surprising because Dorsey, a player that many draftniks preferred to Matt Ryan in the 2008, has mostly been known for making his sizable frame disappear on Sundays.

His tenure with new coach Todd Haley didn't start well; Dorsey wasn't allowed to practice for the first five days of training camp because he was out of shape. But he's shown signs of life in defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast's 3-4 defense, where he plays defensive end.

KC Star: Chiefs WR Bowe questionable; QB Cassel probable

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been a limited participant in practice the last two days and is questionable for Sunday's game in Philadelphia.

Bowe has caught nine balls for 96 yards and two touchdowns in two games thus far but is nursing a hamstring injury.

Quarterback Matt Cassel, who missed Week 1 with a knee injury, returned last Sunday and is probable for this week's game against the Eagles.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson, who has a sack and four tackles this season, is listed as questionable with a groin injury.

Stand by me: Cassel sure KC coach is in his corner

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One game into his career as quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Matt Cassel finds himself surrounded by skeptical fans and critical media. The endorsement he got this week from his head coach?

Lukewarm at best.

Maybe it’s a good thing Cassel never reads the newspaper, listens to the radio talk shows or watches sports on television. Otherwise, he might get the idea that some people are wondering if his guaranteed $28 million contract is the reason he’s starting against Philadelphia this week and Brodie Croyle is not.

"I don’t think a contract has anything to do with it," Cassel said today, his appointed day to speak with the media. "I think they’re going to play the best person out there."

Teicher: Bowe not practicing

Dwayne Bowe was not practicing with the Chiefs today. Instead, he was on an exercise bike on the corner of the practice field and working gingerly at that. He also had a towel draped over his head, suggesting illness rather than injury. Bowe was not listed on the injury report yesterday.

Derrick Johnson was also on an exercise bike. He was listed on yesterday's injury report with a groin injury.

Babb: Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson says he won't play Sunday

Chiefs inside linebacker Derrick Johnson, coming off perhaps the most productive two-game stretch of his five-year career, said Thursday that he has an injured groin and will not play Sunday at Philadelphia.

"Bad timing," he said.

Indeed. As the Chiefs prepare to face the Eagles' high-scoring and multi-dimensional offense, which is almost definitely to include the Wildcat formation, Kansas City needs as many playmakers on defense as possible. Demorrio Williams is expected to start alongside Corey Mays at the other inside position. Johnson had famously run with the third-team defense the past three weeks after a hamstring injury slowed him during the preseason.

Johnson said he thought he would only miss this week's contest and could return next week. He did not practice Thursday and said he expected to travel with the team to Philadelphia.
