PFT: Tyler Thigpen leaves after two quick interceptions
|
Despite some trade rumors to the contrary,
the indications out of Kansas City this week were that Tyler Thigpen
was staying put, regardless of the status of Matt Cassel's knee.
Any
team interested in Thigpen may have had second thoughts after Thursday
night's performance anyhow. Thigpen threw two interceptions in seven
attempts before getting the hook for Matt Gutierrez. continue reading...

Chiefs still looking for answers
|
Here's how the final preseason game
usually plays out: the starters hang around the sideline yukking it
up in baseball caps while players most people have never heard of
battle for the final roster spots.
Coaches and the most die-hard of fans love it. Might as well be
a sandlot game for most everyone else.
It'll be a little different for the Kansas City Chiefs on
Thursday night in St. Louis against the Rams.
The Chiefs need to figure out who'll open the season at
quarterback. Starter Matt Cassel is out with an injury they won't
talk about and neither Brodie Croyle nor Tyler Thigpen has
distinguished himself as a clear-cut favorite to take his place. continue reading...

Burke: Amani Toomer Odd Man Out in K.C.
|
After 13 years with the New York Giants, Amani Toomer
spent this offseason searching for a team to finish his career with and
landed in Kansas City. Now, less than two weeks before the NFL season begins, Toomer's hunt will begin anew.
The Chiefs
cut the 34-year-old veteran on Tuesday -- part of Kansas City's effort
to get down the mandated 75-man roster limit by the close of Sept. 1 --
which could mean the end of the line for Toomer's career.
K.C. brought Toomer aboard at the start of August as the team stockpiled veteran talent -- the Chiefs signed Bobby Engram in March, and Ashley Lelie a couple of weeks after Toomer. continue reading...

Chiefs Release Boone
|
|
The Chiefs today released veteran defensive end Alfonso Boone, a former starter.
Boone began training camp as the starter at left defensive end but
eventually relinquished his spot to Tyson Jackson, the Chiefs
first-round draft pick. Boone was the one squeezed out after the Chiefs
drafted Jackson and Alex Magee with their first two picks this year and
moved Glenn Dorsey to tackle. continue reading...

Teicher: Croyle to start vs. St. Louis
|
|
That's what Todd Haley told the two top available quarterbacks,
Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen. Haley later said how much Croyle would
play could depend on how well he plays against the Rams.
The bigger picture is a starting quarterback for the season opener
Sept. 13 in Baltimore assuming Matt Cassel won't be available. That
decision could be based on results Thursday in St. Louis. continue reading...

Whitlock: KC move reeks of desperation
|
|
We know that 22 guys off the street can win two regular-season NFL
games. What we don’t know is how many coaches it takes to win one NFL
exhibition in Kansas City. Well, we do know Todd Haley believes
the Chiefs can beat the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night without
offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Yesterday morning, Kansas
City’s first-year head coach ended a doomed experiment just 13 days
before the start of the regular season. Chan Gailey as offensive
play-call suggester was the second-dumbest idea implemented during the
brief Scott Egoli era. The dumbest, of course, was signing a Sixty
Million Dollar Man to play quarterback and giving him three dollars of
pass protection and a collection of three-dollar targets. Despite their rich football bloodlines, we can now officially say that Haley and Egoli are learning on the job. If
firing a proven and respected offensive coordinator on the last day of
August was the right thing to do, then it would have been even more
right on the first day of February. continue reading...

Lutz: Decisions by Haley, Glass don't make sense
|
|
I envy people with clarity. It's a rare knack to be able to look at a
situation and know its resolution. I lack clarity, among other things.
Todd Haley and Dan Glass, apparently, do not.
Based
on the moves they made Monday in Kansas City, Haley and Glass can see
clearly now. They can see all obstacles in their way. Gone are the
black clouds that had them blind.
Haley, the first-year
coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, relieved offensive coordinator Chan
Gailey of his duties less than two weeks before the team's opener at
Baltimore.
Haley, who ran the offense for Arizona last
season (or was it Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin who ran
that offense?), is taking over the Chiefs' offense for the time being. continue reading...
