PFT: Bowe's benching is working
|
Five Kansas City wide receivers played in the first quarter of Saturday
night's preseason game against the Texans, and Dwayne Bowe wasn't one
of them.
Despite averaging over 1,000 yards in his first two
seasons, Chiefs coach Todd Haley continues to try to send a message to
Bowe because Haley isn't happy with Bowe's work habits.
The tough love appears to be working.
Bowe
entered with the third team offense, and he caught five passes for 70
yards in two quarters, playing against many guys who probably won't be
in the league this year.
His production isn't surprising, but
Bowe's reaction to his catches is more so. Bowe didn't perform any of
his trademark celebrations or demonstrations after making first downs.
(With Reggie Williams out of the league, Bowe could contend for the
league lead in celebrations-per-catch.) continue reading...

AP: Sloppy start
|
There’s nothing like playing the first preseason game in a driving
rain to cause a lot of slipping and sliding and missed assignments. There
was plenty of that on both sides, but less by the Houston Texans, who
beat Kansas City, 16-10, Saturday night in a pounding rain. “It was a very sloppy night weather-wise, and whoever plays the best
defense and whoever doesn’t put it on the ground usually finds a way to
win in this league,” said Houston coach Gary Kubiak. “I was glad we
did, but we paid a price. We have some guys banged up, and that usually
happens when you get out there in a mess like that.”
Reserve quarterback Rex Grossman had to leave in the fourth quarter due to a hamstring injury.
“It looks like he has a pretty good hamstring,” Kubiak said. “The
first play when he went in he booted and said he felt his hamstring
pull or pop, or whatever. So we’ll have to wait and see.” continue reading...

Williamson's Chief's Notes
|
- The Chiefs are still considering signing veteran receiver Ashley Lelie. The former Bronco and Raider worked out for Kansas City on Thursday. The Chiefs will see how their backup receivers perform in tonight's preseason opener against Houston before making a move on Lelie. He is a speedster who can help in the vertical game.
- Interestingly, the deadline for teams to trade rookies has passed. San Francisco is entangled in a nasty contract battle with receiver Michael Crabtree. I wonder whether the Chiefs ever thought about putting a package together for Crabtree before the deadline. They need receivers and he'd fit Todd Haley's wide-open offense. Plus, the Chiefs have a slew of cap room. I'm sure the 49ers had no real interest in trading Crabtree. But as far as potential trading partners, the Chiefs would have fit fairly nicely.

AP: Veterans Setting Tone for Youthful Chiefs
|
Mike Vrabel lingered on the practice field, trading blows with the
defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, pausing every few seconds to get
instruction before wailing away again. Most of his younger teammates had already headed to the locker room,
yet there was Vrabel, sweat pouring off his chin, a 13-year veteran
still trying to get better. Chiefs Coach Todd Haley could not help smiling at the image. For
a young team, coming off the worst season in franchise history, this
was exactly what Haley, the first-year coach, had in mind when he
brought in Vrabel and all those other veterans to provide the
foundation for the huge rebuilding project in Kansas City.

Williamson: Three things to watch for tonight
|
|
The Chiefs open the preseason Saturday by hosting Houston. Kickoff
is set for 8 p.m. ET. The following is three things to watch in Kansas
City's debut: Matt Cassel:
Cassel will make his debut with the Chiefs. He was just average in a
scrimmage last week. A lot is expected from Cassel, so he needs to get
off to a good start. The pass rush: The Chiefs
in 2008 set an NFL record for the fewest sacks in a season with 10. The
team didn't add any proven pass-rushers in the offseason. Still, the
defense needs to show some type of improvement in that area. continue reading...

BR: The New Look for Tamba Hali and Kansas City Chiefs
|
|
Switching to the 3-4 defense creates many problems for a team built to run a 4-3, it also makes some things easier.
By the end of the last season, it became very apparent that the
team's No. 1 need was a pass rushing DE. With the switch in defensive
schemes, this specific position is no longer needed. Instead, the need
for a pass-rushing linebacker arose.
Lucky for the Chiefs (and the fans), Tamba Hali took the challenge
head on to drop weight and work on his linebacking skills, and Mike
Vrabel came in a package deal with Matt Cassel from the Patriots for
our second round pick.
Hali has indeed been hard at work dropping the necessary weight to play on his feet instead with his hand in the dirt.
Hali commented back in May about losing the weight, "I don't really
need to be 275 pounds. I don't even need to be 260. Maybe I can be 250
like James Harrison or Shawne Merriman. I'm more comfortable at that
weight anyway. Right now, We're looking for speed." continue reading...

AP: Tyler Thigpen and Brodie Croyle duel for Chiefs' backup QB spot
|
It must be tempting for Tyler Thigpen(notes) to sit around and think about what might have been. Handed the chance of a lifetime last year when Kansas City's top two quarterbacks went down for the season with injury, Thigpen started 10 games. It was an unexpected opportunity for a third-teamer who'd been drafted in the late rounds out of tiny Coastal Carolina. The first problem was the team itself: It was bad. A defence that set an NFL record by getting only 10 sacks, an anemic running game and assorted other problems led to a 2-14 record. Out went the coach, then the general manager. continue reading... |

Covitz: The new Arrowhead forgets old stars
|
|

I had the opportunity to take a tour of the new Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, and there's a lot to like. In fact, the $375 million renovation project, while still just 70 percent complete, is a lot cleaner and sleeker than the hodgepodge assault on the senses that is the renovated Kauffman Stadium. Thankfully, there's no merry-go-round or miniature golf course or eye-blurring signage. And the wide concourses, new concession stands, additional rest rooms, club areas, party decks, the two football shaped HD scoreboards, sound system, and the 860 flat-screen TVs all around the stadium are all first-class amenities.
