PFT: Rosenhaus says Zach Thomas isn't retiring
|
In response to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that veteran
linebacker Zach Thomas will retire this week, agent Drew Rosenhaus says
that Thomas will not be retiring.
Says Rosenhaus, via Twitter: "Zach Thomas is
not retiring. He is progressing from his injury & he fully expects
to have a great season with the Chiefs in 09."
So
what gives? Well, it might just be a matter of semantics. Schefter
said that Thomas will retire or reach an injury settlement or be cut. continue reading...

Chiefs refuse to say how badly Cassel is hurt
|
|
Brodie Croyle kept getting hurt and Tyler Thigpen seemed ill-suited for an NFL offense, so the Kansas City Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel and gave him a guaranteed $28 million contract before the first snap.
Now Cassel is hurt, Croyle is healthy and Thigpen is probably still ill-suited. But either he or Croyle could start against the tough defense of the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13 in the season opener.
Cassel injured his knee in Saturday night's preseason loss to Seattle and the Chiefs may be down to Croyle and Thigpen, who between them are 1-18 as NFL starters.

PFT: Haley will call plays on offense
|
Chiefs coach Todd Haley talked a month ago about the difficult decision he made to forgo calling offensive plays in Kansas City.
Something clearly changed over that time, leading to Chan Gailey being relieved of his duties Monday as offensive coordinator.
It's
unclear if Gailey will remain with the organization or whether the
coordinator position will be filled. But Larry Johnson told 610 Radio
in Kansas City Monday that Haley will be calling the plays for the
Chiefs.
The approach is different than what Haley's old boss Ken
Whisenhunt did in Arizona, but ultimately it makes sense. Haley's
offensive philosophies appear quite different than how Gailey has
traditionally run an offense. continue reading...

Covitz: Here are some possible reinforcements
|
|
In the event Matt Cassel is sidelined for several weeks with his
knee injury, there's another former Patriots quarterback on the market.
New England has released quarterback Kevin O'Connell, a third-round
draft pick from San Diego State when Scott Pioli was with the Patriots.
O’Connell, 6-5, 230 pounds, is big enough to take the pounding
Chiefs quarterbacks will be facing. He appeared in two games as a
backup last year and completed four-of-six passes for 23 yards. continue reading...

Chiefs announce that Chan has been "relieved" of his duties
|
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that offensive coordinator Chan
Gailey has been relieved of his duties as the team's offensive
coordinator.
Implicit in the statement from the organization is
that Gailey, while he's out as the offensive coordinator, Gailey might
not be unemployed.

PFT: Carthon the Chiefs next offensive coordinator?
|
With Chan Gailey gone, the Chiefs need a new offensive coordinator.
With the regular-season opener at Baltimore only 13 days away, they need one quickly.
A perusal of the team's current coaching staff suggests a prime candidate for the job: Maurice Carthon.

PFT: Source: Chiefs chop Chan Gailey
|
A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive
advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator
Chan Gailey.
Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February.
It's unclear what has changed between then and now.
Gailey
became a star in the mid-1990s, serving as the offensive coordinator of
the Steelers. After the 1997 season, he became head coach of the
Cowboys, but he lasted only two years. continue reading...

Williamson: Breaking down the Chiefs' game
|
|
A look at the Chiefs' 14-10 loss to visiting Seattle: The Chiefs didn't say what Matt Cassel's
injury was other than he has a leg injury. It's believed that Cassel
has a knee injury that is not overly serious. He departed after being
sacked on the third play of the game and he did not return. The Chiefs
are expected to next address Cassel's situation Monday. The Chiefs
start the season in 14 days at Baltimore. Cassel was brought to
Kansas City for stability at the position after the Chiefs saw two
quarterbacks do down with injuries last season. Cassel's injury
Saturday night was another indication of how the team needs much better
offensive line play. This unit is a liability, and Cassel, when he
returns, is going to have to deal with playing under constant pressure. continue reading...
